#h1-Your own Cloud with Nextcloud-h1#--#
#h4-#b-a setup example utilising own web site, Linux, KDE-PIM and Android-b#-h4#--#--#
Nextcloud is an open source PIM-System build with PHP ( PIM = personal information management ). The web based cloud can be self hosted if you have a web hosting service including a domain, PHP, optionally also MySQL database. --# #imgS-#src-./docs/NextcloudLogo.png-src# For the complete image I also would mention, that Nextcloud offers subscriptions to use their hosting services, but in this article I just handle the self hosting way, which is also free and very much secure as you host your own data within your private hosting web page. --#--# The Nextcloud server software can be downloaded from #lnk-https://nextcloud.com/-lnk#Nextcloud-atxt#. The zipped file needs to be unpacked and uploaded to the designated web folder of your web hosting server. Once you navigate this URL in your web browser, an installation assistant will guide you through the installation proccess. --#--# At this point you will have the option to choose between the MySQL database you previously should have set up , or you choose the SqLite3 database as the database engine. Both choices have pros and cons, SQLite3 is portable on the other hand for bigger projects MySQL is recommended. --#--# After the installation process you can log in to your Nextcloud-Account. Here you find all means to set up communications, as calendar contacts optionally Nextcloud mail. Also furtheron you can install other more or less usefull apps within your Nextcloud admin page in order to enhance your productive system.--#--# #imgL-#src-./docs/Nextcloud0.png-src# --#--#The apps can be used as web apps within the browser, some of the apps can also be installed on mobile phones and personal computers.Apps on your devices can connect via web dav your email, calendar, task managment and contactapps. In that way all your devices are being synced. Then as next you can also sync local folders between cloud and devices. --#--#Regarding syncing files and/or notes from and to your computer, you can install the Nextcloud-Desktopapp on Linux ( other Operating-Systems have that as well ) and there you can assign the folder you want to sync.As for me I recommend to use a very nice note taking app named Zettlr, which is open source and free.Using Zettlr I can set the notes folder to be inside the synced folder, in order your learning stuff and notes will be synced to your cloud and other devices. --#--# #imgM-#src-./docs/Kontact.png-src# --#--# I exclusively work with Linux-Systems, so my example is leaned on Linux-KDE, Linux KDE-PIM-Software named Kontact. Further below I also have a note about how to use Nextcloud within your Android phones. --#--#As mentioned KDE-PIM Kontact includes Mail, Calendar, To-Do-Management and Contacts. --#--# But other PIM-Software work as well. I tested Evolution wich was also fine, just inside a KDE desktop KDE-Software was a bit better choice than Evolution. Thunderbird works also but I had lately much trouble with Thunderbird regarding user profile problems, so I stopped using Thunderbird. Windows will likely have a simillar setup. --#--# There are some obstacles in Kmail you need to overcome, wich I present here, after which Kmail will be working nicely. --#--#
After setting up an account you have to imediately adjust the sent-folder, and drafts-folder, otherwise
it all comes into the local folder:

--#The receiving and sending settings needs to be adjusted, as for me it helped disabling server side
subscriptions and choosing to auto detect the connection parameters: --##imgL-#src-./docs/Kmail2.png-src# --#--#Syncing with your cloud is very convenient if you have multiple devices, but additionally you are even able to set up further users. --#--# In mobile use case ( Android ) you can choose the app DAVx5 which is available from the F-Droid repo. These are open source apps and free from trackers. Regarding a mobile mail app I have very good experience with K-9 Mail on Android. --#--#I hope this brief intro was a bit of a help for how to set up your own cloud.--#--#Andy Gaal--#--#--#--#
